We all know that it’s important to change the oil in our vehicle periodically. But you may not know that you should also keep an eye on your power steering fluid. Those of you of a certain age may have experienced driving a car with manual steering—where you basically man-handle 3000 lbs through sheer brute strength. Well, if your power steering fails, you will get to find out how much fun that is. Here’s a hint: it isn’t.

Power steering fluid can break down over time because of the high-pressure environment inside the system. If the fluid oxidizes from the high pressure it can lose the ability to keep internal seals and o-rings soft and conditioned, which can cause leaks in the rack and pinion, steering gear and power steering pump – and, well, you get the picture.
