It's not always the mileage, sometimes it's the years.

Usually when you think of replacing a tire on your vehicle, it’s because you’ve put a lot of miles on it or because the tread is getting thin.  But if you’ve been watching the news recently you may have heard there is another factor to watch—the age of the tire.  Even if the tire has not been used that much, if it was manufactured more than five years ago, you should have an expert take a look to make sure the sidewall is in good shape and that nothing is deteriorating.

If you’re not sure how old your tire is, here’s how to find out.  Look for the letters and numbers on the sidewall (newer tires have these numbers on both sides, older tires may have these numbers mounted on the inside, which means you’ll have to get under the car to see them).  The number will look like this:

DOT MK87 FOWR 4202 –
DOT means the tire meets Department of Transportation standards. MK is the tire plant code, 87 is the tire size code, FOWR is the manufacturer symbol identifying tire brand and the numbers 4202 are the week and year the tire was made, the 42nd week of the year 2002.
